The AK5 is our newest machine and a major leap forward in quality and user experience. It features an ultra-quiet Japanese precision motor, a digital speed dial with readout, a front LED light so you can see your work clearly, and smoother, more consistent tufting action. It only tufts at a fixed 16 mm pile height, which is actually ideal for most beginner and intermediate projects. If noise is a concern (apartment living, shared spaces), the AK5 is the machine to choose. It accepts both cut and loop pile.
The Duo is our bestselling machine and the one we recommend most often to beginners. It does both cut and loop pile in a single machine (hence the name). It comes in three pile-height variants: Low Pile (7–18 mm), Medium Pile (20–30 mm), and High Pile (35–45 mm) — so you buy the one that matches the style of rugs you want to make. The Duo is slightly louder than the AK5 but offers more pile-height range.
The AK-III is a pneumatic (air-powered) machine designed for serious high-pile work, capable of pile heights from 20 to 60 mm. It requires an air compressor and is louder and heavier than the electric machines. It's best suited to tufters who want big, shaggy rugs and are ready for a steeper learning curve. Not recommended as a first machine.
