Tufting Workshops for Kids and Teens in Philadelphia

September 08, 2026

Most craft studios in Philadelphia are adults-only, and for tufting specifically, a lot of them say so in bold. We get a steady stream of messages from parents who've been turned away elsewhere asking whether their kid can take a class with us. The answer is yes, with two age rules, and this page explains how it works.

The age policy

  • Ages 10 to 13: welcome, with a parent or guardian present in the studio for the whole workshop.
  • Ages 14 to 17: can attend on their own. Drop-off and pick-up are fine.
  • All minors: a parent or guardian completes and signs a workshop release before the class. Email us before the class and we'll get it to you.

Under 10, we ask you to wait. A tufting machine is a real power tool, and the class moves at a pace that assumes some patience and hand strength.

Why we allow it when others don't

Tufting machines punch yarn through cloth with a reciprocating needle and, on cut-pile machines, a small pair of scissors. Used properly they're safe — the needle sits against the cloth, not in the air — but they demand attention. We've taught tufting since 2018, including youth programs, and our experience is that a supervised eleven-year-old can absolutely make a rug. What makes it work is the supervision, which is why the under-14 rule requires a guardian in the room and why our instructors stay close to younger tufters at the frame.

The trade-off we're honest about: a kids' piece is usually simpler than an adult's, because we steer younger tufters toward big shapes and fewer colours. That's also the advice we give adults. Tufting rewards bold designs.

Which workshop suits which age

  • Mini-tuft workshop — $75. The best fit for ages 10 to 13 and for most teens. It's the shortest format, so attention holds, and the smaller piece is finished within the session. If you're not sure, start here.
  • One Day Tufting workshop — $150. The full introduction, suitable for teens who are serious about the craft — the ones who've been asking for a machine. It's a long day; bring food.
  • Drink and Tuft — $100. An evening session where adults may have a drink. Teens 14+ can attend, but it's designed as a night-out format; the Mini-tuft or One Day workshops are a better fit for most young tufters.

Every format includes the frame, cloth, yarn, machines and instruction. Nobody needs to bring anything.

Booking a parent and child together

For ages 10 to 13 the guardian has to be present anyway, so the easiest version is two seats in the same session — you both tuft, side by side. Book two spots on the same date on the workshop page. If you'd rather watch, book one seat and check with us at support@tufttheworld.com about a guardian observing.

Birthday parties and groups of kids

A private session is the way to do a group of young tufters — you get the studio, a time that suits the group, and an instructor ratio that works for the ages involved. The same guardian rules apply: for a group aged 10 to 13, an adult stays for the session. Details on Private Parties and Lessons; for larger or school groups, our group tufting guide covers how we structure it.

What to wear and bring

Closed-toe shoes, clothes that can get fuzzy, long hair tied back, nothing loose and dangling near the machine. A snack if the class overlaps a mealtime. A design idea helps — something with a few big colour shapes, about 24" x 24" or smaller. Thin lines and small lettering fight the material, at any age.

Everything else about the day — building entry, the Butterfly keypad, parking, transit — is in What to Expect at Your First Tufting Workshop in Philadelphia and the Workshop FAQs.

Where

All workshops run at our studio in the Bok Building, 1901 S. 9th Street, Room 501, Philadelphia, PA 19148, in South Philly near the Snyder and Tasker-Morris stops on the Broad Street Line and the 45 and 47 buses.

After the class

If a teen comes out of a workshop wanting a setup at home, don't rush it. Read What Does It Actually Cost to Start Tufting? first, and know that the machine is the smallest part of the space and mess involved. A gift card toward a future class or supplies is a lower-commitment step — see our gift guide.

Current dates are on the Philadelphia Tufting Workshops page. Questions about a specific child or group: support@tufttheworld.com.
