About the residency

Tuft the World's Artist Residency offers emerging and established artists dedicated time, tools, and space to explore the expressive possibilities of tufting and textile-based art.

Blending hands-on studio access with creative mentorship and peer exchange, the residency provides an immersive alternative to traditional art programs. It's rooted in experimentation, material curiosity, and making at scale. Residents gain 24/7 access to professional tufting tools, a vibrant workshop environment, and opportunities to share their work through open studios, workshops, or group exhibitions. Designed to support both personal growth and artistic risk-taking, the program helps residents push their practice forward while connecting to a broader maker community.

The residency will be held in our warehouse/production space in Southwest Philadelphia.

Program Highlights

  • A shared work space with tufting machines, frames, carvers, finishing tools to make small to medium tufted pieces.
  • Access to our CNC robo-tufter.
  • Six in-person demos from tufting expert and author, Tim Eads for the two week session. Three demos for the one week sessions.
  • Intimate setting with a 3 student limit.
  • 24/7 access to the space to work.
  • Warehouse with HVAC and good lighting

Cost

  • 1-week session costs $300 + materials.
  • 2-week session costs $400 + materials.
  • More information about the materials fee is in the information packet. There is also an opportunity to work in exchange for a discount. See the work exchange section below for more information.
  • Price does not include housing, food, or transportation. We can make recommendations for out of town artists, if needed. The studio is reachable by public transit on the Route 34 trolley or has free parking, if you are traveling by car.
  • The session fee and base material fee must be paid in advance. We offer an installment plan using ShopPay (affirm) through our website (assuming you qualify)
