How Much Yarn Do You Need?

octubre 03, 2026

Estimating yarn quantities is one of those things that gets easier with experience — but here are the key variables and a useful benchmark to start from.

What Affects Yarn Usage

  • Pile height: Higher pile uses significantly more yarn per square foot
  • Number of strands: Tufting with two strands uses twice as much as one
  • Tufting density: How tightly packed your rows are
  • Yarn thickness: Thinner yarns require more strands to fill the pile
  • Project size: Obviously!

A Useful Benchmark

Using an AK-I Cut-Pile Machine set to 12mm pile, tufting with two strands of Reflect Wool: approximately 8 ounces (half a pound) per square foot.

Since Reflect Wool comes in 16-ounce (1 lb) cones, two cones will cover roughly 4 square feet — about a 24" × 24" area — before both run out.

Planning Your Order

Always order more than you think you need. Running out mid-project and trying to match a dye lot is frustrating. A 10–20% buffer is smart, especially for large single-color areas.

TTW's rug pricing calculator at priceyourcraft.com also estimates yarn needs when you enter your rug dimensions — a great tool for planning before you start.

Cone Size, Weight and Labels

Our yarn is wound and sold by weight, not by cone size or volume. Each Reflect Wool cone is wound to an exact length of about 600 meters, which equals 1 pound (16 oz) of yarn. Our newer winders wind yarn much tighter and denser, so a full 1 lb cone may look noticeably smaller than older cones or other colors, but it holds the same amount of yarn.

Color labels are now placed inside the cone instead of wrapped around the outside.

If you think a cone is short, weigh it. The empty cone itself weighs about 1.3 oz, so subtract that from the total. If the yarn weighs under a pound, email support@tufttheworld.com and we'll make it right.

Bulk Yarn Discounts

Buying lots of yarn? Order 12 or more cones (of any yarn, colors can be mixed) and enter code Bulkyarn12 at checkout for 20% off. Order 20 or more and enter code Bulkyarn20 for 25% off. These discounts can't be combined with any other offer.

Tip: our large box holds 24 cones, so ordering in multiples of 24 helps your order ship in fewer boxes.
