What is the AK5 tufting machine?

junio 23, 2026

What is the AK5?

The AK5 is Tuft the World's newest electric cut-and-loop tufting machine, designed in collaboration with Karida Outdoors. It's built for tufters who want a premium, refined experience right from their first session.

AK5 features

  • Ultra-quiet operation — significantly quieter than the Duo and AK-I/II machines, thanks to a precision Japanese motor. Great for apartments, shared spaces, or long tufting sessions.
  • Digital speed readout — a digital display shows your speed setting for consistent, repeatable results.
  • Front LED light — illuminates your work surface so you can see your design clearly as you tuft.
  • Smooth, consistent tufting action — the motor produces even, reliable punch cycles with less vibration than older machine models.
  • Cut and loop pile — toggle between cut pile and loop pile modes.
  • Fixed 16 mm pile height — the AK5 tufts at a single pile height (16 mm / ~0.63"), which is in the sweet spot for low-pile cut and loop work and eliminates the need for pile-height adjustments.
  • 110v–220v compatible — works with household current in the U.S. and internationally with a plug adapter.
  • Weight: 3 lbs (1.4 kg)

Who is the AK5 best for?

The AK5 is ideal for:

  • Beginners who want the best entry-level experience without having to fiddle with pile-height adjustments
  • Apartment or studio tufters where noise is a concern
  • Tufters who value aesthetics and precision in their tools
  • Anyone doing low-pile cut or loop work for rugs, wall hangings, or home décor

How does the AK5 compare to the Duo?

The main tradeoff is flexibility vs. refinement. The Duo comes in low, medium, and high pile variants and allows pile-height adjustment; the AK5 tufts at a fixed 16 mm height. If you know you want a fluffy, high-pile shag rug, the medium or high-pile Duo is a better fit. If you want the quietest, smoothest machine experience and are happy with low-pile work, the AK5 wins.

Price and availability

The AK5 is available at tufttheworld.com for $250. It's also available as part of our Tufting Starter Kit bundled with a frame and cloth.
