Which Tufting Machine Should I Buy? Comparing the AK-I, AK-II, DUO, AK5 and AK-III

junio 23, 2026

Here's a side-by-side look at the Tuft the World machine lineup to help you find the right fit. All of our machines work with 110v–220v electricity.

The Short Answer

  • Complete beginner: The DUO or the AK5. The DUO gives you flexibility to explore pile styles without committing early.
  • You want the quietest, most refined machine: The AK5.
  • You want a specific low pile size: The AK5. It tufts at a fixed 16mm, which is great for consistent results.
  • You know you want cut pile only: The AK-I. It's ultra simple and low maintenance.
  • You want high pile, shag or sculptural rugs: The AK-III or the medium/high pile DUO.
  • Advanced tufters or studios: The AK-III Industrial. It's powerful, but has a steeper learning curve.

A Closer Look at Our Current Machines

AK5: The quiet, refined beginner machine

The AK5 is our newest machine and a major leap forward in quality and user experience. We use it a lot in our own production. It features:

  • An ultra-quiet Japanese precision motor
  • A digital speed dial with readout
  • A front LED light so you can see your work clearly
  • Smoother, more consistent tufting action

It tufts cut or loop pile at a fixed 16mm pile height, which is ideal for most beginner and intermediate projects. If noise is a concern (apartment living, shared spaces), the AK5 is the machine to choose.

DUO: The versatile workhorse

The DUO is our bestselling, tried-and-true machine and the one we recommend most often to beginners. It does both cut and loop pile in a single machine (hence the name). It comes in three pile-height versions (low, medium and high), so you buy the one that matches the style of rugs you want to make. We've used it in our workshops for years, so it handles a lot of wear.

Factory settings: The medium pile DUO (20–30mm range) ships set to 30mm, and the high pile DUO (35–45mm range) ships set to 40mm, so each is ready to tuft at that height out of the box.

AK-III Industrial: The professional-grade machine

The AK-III is a pneumatic (air-powered) machine designed for serious high-pile work, from 20 to 60mm. It requires an air compressor and is louder and heavier than our electric machines. It's best suited to tufters who want big, shaggy rugs and are ready for a steeper learning curve. We don't recommend it as a first machine.

AK5 vs. DUO: Which Low-Pile Machine Should I Choose?

The AK5 and the low pile DUO are our two most-asked-about low-pile machines. Here's how they differ:

  • AK5: Lightweight, ultra quiet, and tufts beautifully. The main trade-off is that it tufts at only one pile height (16mm), in either cut or loop.
  • DUO (low pile): Tufts both cut and loop from 8mm to 16mm, so you can adjust pile height and get a wider range than the AK5. It's a bit heavier and louder than the AK5.

Rule of thumb: If you want a quiet, light machine and you're happy with a single 16mm pile, choose the AK5. If you want to vary your pile heights, choose the DUO.

Closest Match to the AK-I

Looking for a backup or replacement that feels like the AK-I? The low pile DUO is very similar to the AK-I, and it also gives you loop pile.

Which Pile Height Should I Choose?

  • Low pile (7–18mm): Dense, carpet-like finish. Great for detailed designs and rugs intended for floor use. Easiest to work with for beginners.
  • Medium pile (20–30mm): Plush and cushy. A good middle ground for decorative rugs and wall hangings.
  • High pile (35–60mm): Shaggy, luxurious look. Uses more yarn and is harder to control detail, but very dramatic and popular on social media.
